Your Newborn Session
Before your session
Newborn photos are typically recommended for babies up to two weeks old. Babies are still very sleepy and squishy during the first two weeks and during this time, it is much easier to pose baby and capture those sweet, curled up images. When you make the decision to book your newborn session with Liana Maione Photography, we will decide upon a tentative date between 4 and 14 days after your due date. Then, when baby is born, we make any necessary adjustments to our date, to keep our session within approximately the first two week window. Please note that if your baby has already arrived, I am happy to take on older newborns as well, space permitting *(see note below on older newborns).
After booking, I ask that you touch base with any updates throughout your pregnancy or let me know of any changes to your due date. I ask that you contact me when your due date passes or when baby arrives. I would love to know that everything went according to the birth plan and whether or not there are any issues such as jaundice, NICU time, extended hospital stay or any other issues regarding the health of the baby that will help in planning and preparing for our session. I request the following information when baby arrives. I also love it when clients send a photo of their new baby!
• Date/time baby was born
• Weight of baby
• Name (if known)
My wish is for healthy wonderful deliveries. However, I know that complications or postpartum recovery delays do happen and if this is the case, adjustments to our newborn session can be made following baby’s delivery.
Once we have confirmed our session date, I will send you a prep guide to help your baby's session be the best it can be! We will also discuss your preferences for your baby's session so we can begin the planning process!
For families that would like to include a sibling, I require that a third party (or one parent) bring the sibling just for their part of the session, either at the beginning or end - we can discuss what works best for your family before your session occurs.
During your session
All newborn sessions occur at my cozy in-home studio, in Langley, which is about a 45-minute drive from Vancouver. I welcome families from all over the lower mainland.
I schedule all newborn sessions, weekdays, at 10:00am. I do not schedule sessions on the weekend to allow myself to spend time with my own family; no exceptions.
Newborn portrait sessions are typically about 3 hours in length. This allows for time photographing, cuddling, soothing and feeding if necessary. Moms are welcome to feed their babies here in whatever way is best for their family. Anytime baby is hungry during your session, we pause and make sure they get fed, as baby’s needs are our priority. The studio is very warm, for baby’s comfort and it is typical for white noise to be playing to soothe baby and limit other distractions.
During our session, I take the time to go through a variety of poses with baby, both on my posing beanbag for that polished smooth background look as well as in props (bowls, little beds, wraps, etc.). While I never guarantee a specific number of “set-ups” as each baby is different in the amount they sleep or poses they prefer, I do aim for 1 - 2 colours on my beanbag poser and 1 - 3 set-ups in props. All packages include your choice of colours, outfits and props from my collection. I love textures, natural fibres, flowers and elements of nature. I have simple props and fabrics that are subtle and allow your baby to be the focus of the shoot.
I provide the opportunity for you to share preferences for your session prior to your session date and will have already set up for your baby, based on your preferences. However, you are also welcome to provide input into colours and set-ups during your session and so if you see an item in the studio, while you’re here, that you would love to have incorporated into your session, just let me know. I am happy to incorporate additional items for you if something speaks to your heart when you see it.
You may choose to use our session time to photograph BABY ONLY, or you may choose to include PARENTS and/or SIBLINGS. If siblings are to be included, please let me know before your session day and we will decide if we will start with or end with sibling photos. I require that you arrange to have a family member (either Dad or a close friend or relative), bring sibling(s) only for their portion of the session. My studio is small and cannot accommodate siblings for the duration of the newborn session.
After your session
I professionally edit a selection of the best photos from our session and create a beautiful gallery for you of the 30 best images. I take care and hand edit each and every photo.
Within 14 days of our session, families receive a link and password to view their own personal galleries and make decisions on which products they would like to order.
Families may choose from digital packages and collections, print products (such as heirloom albums, prints or canvas) or a combination of both. Some families appreciate the ability to purchase digital files and print the images themselves, while others enjoy having the legacy that digital files will provide and wish to supplement their memories with additional print products.
Once payment has been received, digital images are conveniently delivered via download from your personal gallery. Print products are then ordered and you will be notified when they are available for pickup.
*OLDER NEWBORNS (3 - 6 weeks) may be accomodated if space is available. As a newborn progresses in development the bones harden and they tend to “uncurl” and stretch out more. They become more alert and less sleepy. A newborn photo session can successfully be achieved at any of these weeks with special care and prep, but it is important to understand that certain poses may not be possible as they get older. It is typical for sessions of older newborns to include more wraps and swaddles as well as more natural poses. If your baby has already been born or is older than two weeks, please contact me for availability.
